Running and cycling in the Brecon Beacons

You’ve all heard of the Tour of Britain cycle race but I bet you’ve never heard of the Dragons Back running race. Both events came to the Brecon Beacons recently.

I wanted to get a shot of the cycle race from an elevated position to show the whole scene of spectators, cars and bikes. Even though I got there early I still found it difficult to park and when I did I was a considerable distance away from my planned photography position. Half an hour later I was set up and ready on a very windy, cold hillside. To make matters worse the race was an hour behind schedule. By the time it arrived I was pretty cold!

Shame about the red car.

The other event to reach the Brecon Beacons recently was the Dragons Back Race – probably the toughest running race in the world. It started in North Wales and finished 5 days later in Carreg Cennen Castle, South Wales.

The runners had to climb to the top of Snowdon and many other peaks on the way, running nearly 200 miles in 5 days!

Over 90 runners from UK and abroad started but only 29 finished.

And finally a sunset.

I know they’re cheesy and everyone photographs them but there’s a reason for that – sunsets are simply wonderful!
