Happy Christmas Everyone

Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens at 55mm. ISO 200. 1/100 sec f8.

Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lens at 55mm. ISO 200, 1/320 sec f 9.

These two photographs are by a good friend of mine, Adrian Kay. I’m not sure what the top one is of but the bottom one is part of a French trawler.

These photos were taken with a bog standard Nikon D40 with the ‘kit’ lens – the lens that comes with the camera. So, we have a combination of Nikons cheapest camera, (at the time), with only 6 million pixels and it’s cheapest lens. Adrian liked his photos and wanted huge prints so emailed them to Photobox. A recipe for disaster? Wrong!

Cheap low pixel count camera, cheap lens, no editing – result: FANTASTIC! I’ve seen the photos on his wall and they are amazing.

By using ISO 200 and around f8 Adrian has got theĀ best out of his camera.

It’s easy to get hung up on expensive equipment and post image editing but here’s proof that keeping things simple can work very, very well.

The limitations of this blog mean that I can only post photos up to 1GB so the real quality of Adrian’s photos may not be apparent.

Happy Christmas to one and all.
